BELIEF IN A CRUEL GOD MAKES A CRUEL MAN
It is from the Bible that man has learned cruelty, rapine and murder; for the belief of a cruel God makes a cruel man. -- Thomas Paine, as quoted by Joseph Lewis in Inspiration and Wisdom from the Writings of Thomas Paine (which contains no pagination or source citations) http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/paine.htm

Faith-Based War - From 9 11 to Catastrophic Success in Iraq
The Bush administration was prompted to invade Iraq by a religious vision that blinded them to the realities of the struggle against terror, and propelled them into moral and political catastrophe. The propaganda campaign that promoted the war, the choice of a self-defeating "Shock and Awe" invasion, and the expanded torture program bear witness to a faith-based policy that violated democratic ideals and perverted religious truth.
The Two Most Essential, Abhorrent, Intolerable Lies Of George W. Bush's Memoir - 1
History is likely to judge Bush most harshly for two things in particular: Launching a war against a country that had not attacked us, and approving the use of cruel and inhumane interrogation techniques. And that's why the two most essential lies -- among the many -- in his new memoir are that he had a legitimate reason to invade Iraq, and that he had a legitimate reason to torture detainees. Neither is remotely true. But Bush must figure that if he keeps making the case for himself -- particularly if it goes largely unrebutted by the traditional media, as it has thus far -- then perhaps he can blunt history's verdict.

Why Christianity Must Change or Die - A Bishop Speaks to Believers In Exile
John Shelby Spong, the author, is the Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. Spong refers to himself as a believer in exile. He believes the world into which Christianity was born was limited and provincial, particularly when viewed from the perspective of the progress in knowledge and technology made over the past two millennia. This makes any ideas or beliefs formulated in 1st-century Judea totally inadequate to our progressive minds and lives today. So Spong is in exile until Christianity is re-formed to discard all of the outdated and, according to Spong, false tenets of Christianity.
